Mad Science of the Lehigh Valley presented “Soaring with Superheroes” at Kutztown Community Library July 9.

“Scientists are superheroes because they’re not afraid of what people think,” said Mad Scientist presenter John Cutlip. “And sometimes superheroes are like weird and sometimes when you do things that are out of the ordinary people might think you’re a little weird but a superhero won’t mind to be a little weird sometimes. Think outside the box and you can discover all sorts of marvelous things no one ever thought about before.”

Demonstrations included the science behind an optical illusion, air pressure and electricity. They learned about the scientific method, the importance of observation, and making a hypothesis.

“When you have knowledge you have power, and when you have power people can’t fool you as much,” he told the children. “You need to think for yourselves and science helps us think for ourselves.”

Cutlip explained that scientists from Mad Science present science programs across Lehigh Valley at schools, summer camps, birthday parties, preschools.

“We have fun with the kids so they get a taste of science,” said Cutlip. “They won’t remember everything about the science details but they’ll know that science is fun and they should learn it and they’ll know knowledge is power, that’s an important thing for them to learn.”

The program was part of the Kutztown Community Library Summer Reading Program.
