On July 13, Hamburg Area School Directors voted, 6-0, to increase school meal prices for the 2015-16 school year.

Lunch prices will reflect a 10 cent increase and breakfast prices will be increased by 20 cents.

The price of lunch for secondary and elementary students will increase to $2.60 and $2.40, respectively.

Breakfast prices will increase to $1.90 for secondary students and $1.80 for elementary students.

“Our lunch prices are the lowest they can be as set by the National School Lunch Program,” said David Shefter, food services coordinator. “We are still in the bottom third in the county for lunch prices.”

Almost 40 percent of students in the district are part of the free lunch program, according to Shefter.

The money that the district receives for the free lunch program cannot be used to pay for paid lunches, Shefter said.

In other news, Dr. Richard Mextorf attended his first school directors meeting since becoming the district’s superintendent on July 1.

Mextorf said, “There’s a lot of talent in this room and many of those I met are going above and beyond to make for a smooth transition.”

Mextorf also said that he was impressed with the talent and the generosity of the school directors, school administrators and staff.

He replaced Steven Keifer who resigned after serving the district as superintendent since 2007.

School directors also approved the appointment of Dr. Shawn Gravish as co-principal at the high school.

Gravish will work with Chris Spohn, the current principal.

“We’re working out the details and want to have a team-oriented approach,” Gravish said. “I look forward to working with the kids.”

Gravish will continue at his former position as principal at Perry Elementary Center until a replacement is found.

In other news, school directors approved an agreement with Keifer to act as an agent for the district in a lawsuit versus E.R. Stuebner regarding Perry Elementary Center.

The lawsuit involves the completion of work at the school, according to school director Brooke Adams.

The next meeting of school directors is Monday, July 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the James A. Gilmartin Community Room.
