Kutztown Bicentennial Celebration Calendar of Events

Thursday, July 30Celebrate the Seniors: St. Paul’s U.C.C., 4pm – St. Paul’s U.C.C. (47 South Whiteoak Street, Kutztown) is hosting a free dinner to fete Kutztown residents who are 75 and older. Dinner will be served from 4pm to 6pm, followed by a concert by The Kutztown Community Choir. Anyone who needs transportation should contact St. Paul’s at 610-683-3393. Parking is available in the St. Paul’s parking lots.

Friday, July 31Dinner on Main: 200 block of Main Street, 6pm – Kutztown’s 200 block of West Main Street will be closed to traffic, and the street space will be set up and decorated for outdoor dining. Attendees will be encouraged to purchase food from special menus created by Kutztown restaurants: Camillo’s, La Cocina Mexicana, The Kutztown Fire Company, Pop’s Malt Shoppe, and The Pub. Live music from local artists will begin at 6pm with the restaurants ready to serve at 7pm. Make sure you don’t miss the special 200th birthday cake being created by local Kutztown bakers. The food and drink are reasonably priced, and the Mayor of Kutztown has rescinded the open container law for this one night to allow the enjoyment of beer and wine. The outdoor cafe will close at 11pm so the street can be re-opened. This event will be held rain-or-shine. Parking is available at municipal parking lots.

Saturday, August 1 Bicentennial Parade, Main Street: 7pm – In an homage to the memorable Halloween parades in Kutztown’s past, the bicentennial parade will be held in the evening, starting at 7pm. And like other parades, it will form at the Kutztown Fairground and Kutztown University (College Boulevard), then march down Main Street and end at the Kutztown Park. The judges’ stand will be located near the intersection of Main and Willow Streets, but great views can be had all along Main Street. The rain date is Sunday, August 2 at 1:00pm.

After Parade Party, Kutztown Fire Company: 8:30pm – When the parade is over, make your way to the Kutztown Fire Company, 310 Noble Street, where the Kutztown Hobos and the fire company are co-hosting the after-parade party. Food and drink will be available for purchase, and music will entertain as you share your bicentennial memories with friends and neighbors.

Sunday, August 2Kutztown Day, Kutztown Park, all day: Held for over 100 years in the Kutztown Park on the first Sunday of August, Kutztown Day and its fireworks will be the closing activity of the bicentennial celebration. Kutztown Day activities include concerts, picnics, family reunions, games (organized and spontaneous), raffles, contests, and other “old fashioned” fun. Make sure you have a blanket to sit on for the fireworks at the end of the day. It’s a wonderful way to end the bicentennial celebration and spend time with friends, neighbors, and family. Admission is free. Parking is available at the Kutztown Park and surrounding streets.

Our local fire, police and EMT’s will be there to show off their vehicles. Local businesses will have tables with information, and there will be a K-9 demonstration, as well a Police vs. Fire Department competition.

Aug. 8Friend, Inc. Community Services 6th annual “Brake the Cycle of Poverty”: benefit bike ride 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Keystone Hall, Kutztown University. Choose from 10, 25, 33 or 62 mile routes. SAG support, well marked roads and cue sheets, food for registered riders, goodie bags, coupons, prizes, and more. Registration starts at 7 a.m. Children under 12 ride for free. Aug. 22Farm Festival: At the Historical Dreibelbis Farm, 356 Hard Hill Road, Hamburg, located on Route 143 south of Virginville. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities will include demonstrations of life on the farm including basket weaving, birdhouse making, blacksmith, broom making, butchering, butter making, candle making, chair caning, dairying, dowsing, fabric dyeing, glass bead art, handmade ceramics, jams and jellies, pewtercasting, sauerkraut making, threshing machines, tools from the past, wood turning, wool spinning, handmade lotions and soaps, old-time farm equipment, quilting for beginners, Native American displays, a hay ride and old-time games for the children.
