Earlier this month, volunteer workers could be spotted in bright yellow shirts as took part in Mission Trip Birdsboro 2015. These volunteers – broken into teams scattered throughout the community – provided help and repairs to 19 different work sites.
According to Mission Trip Birdsboro Committee member Stuart Wells, more than 50 volunteers assisted 13 homeowners. They also made improvements to five community locations throughout the Birdsboro area. This effort took place Wednesday, July 15 to Saturday, July 18.
“St. Paul’s started Mission Trip Birdsboro last year-at that point it was a bit of an experiment,” said Wells.
The community locations included Rustic Picnic Park, two borough playgrounds, the Optimist Baseball Field, and the Birdsboro Elementary Center.
Volunteers gathered with those that received help to celebrate on the lawn at St. Paul’s UCC, Birdsboro, after church service on Sunday, July 19. That’s not to say they went hungry while they were working.
“Just as last year the volunteers were all provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner,” said Wells. “Also, just like last year, the food was fantastic. Richard Wolf takes charge of the kitchen and always plans wonderful meals. In the mornings while the field workers were loading materials to haul to their worksites Richard could be seen checking the smokers that slowly smoked and cooked our evening meal. He even made the 50 some hungry volunteers creme brulee for desert one night!”
Several local businesses including Beacon Container, Dengler Funeral home, C.J. Tires, Birdsboro Beverage Co. and Boyer’s Market supported this year’s event, in addition to J.P. Mascaro, Home Depot, Lowes, Vist Bank and Redner’s Market.
The meeting to officially launch Mission Trip Birdsboro 2015 was held at St. Paul’s UCC, Birdsboro, on Sunday, July 12. Volunteers came from St. Paul’s UCC, St. John’s Hill UCC and Allice Focht UMC.
