Police investigate fatal fire in North Heidelberg Township; Victim identified as Petra Schmidt

The State Police at Reading are investigating an Aug. 5 fatal fire that occurred at 12:25 p.m. at 453 Charming Forge Road, North Heidleberg Twp.

“Fire crews were called to a residential structure fire after a neighbor found smoke coming from the residence. Upon arriving crews found smoke and fire on the second floor. Search and rescue operations were hampered by the conditions. A search was conducted as soon as conditions allowed and the victim was located in the second floor bathroom,” according to a state police report filed by investigating officer Trooper Janssen Herb.

The victim has been identified as Petra H. Schmidt, age 60, of Robesonia. An autopsy has been scheduled for 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 to determine the exact cause of death.

“Fire crews remained at the scene during the investigation as fire and heat continued to be present on the second and third floor walls and ceilings,” according to the report.

According to state police, the investigation showed the fire originated in the second floor bedroom.

“Several ignition factors are still being investigated including smoking, electrical and candles. Damage is estimated at $150,000,” according to state police.

Investigation is continuing.
