About 100 people turned out bright and early Friday morning, Aug. 7, for the opening of the area’s newest Wawa – the company’s 22nd opening of 2015. The store is located at 1111 Grosser Road in Douglass (Mont.).

The opening included a ribbon cutting, free coffee, specials and fanfare. It also featured a Hoagies for Heroes hoagie building competition between Gilbertsville Fire Department and the Douglass Township police department facing off in a sandwich-making battle. Each team competed to see who could make the most hoagies in three minutes.

In the end – and after a tight race – bragging rights went to the fire department team, which built 27 sandwiches to the police department’s 24. The competition was all in fun however, with each team earning $1000 for their charities: Gilbertsville Fire and Rescue and The Salvation Army.

The store, which has added 45 jobs to the area, will offer free coffee through August 16, along with several grand opening specials.

Wawa plans to open 50 new stores this year – 25 in the mid-Atlantic market and 25 in the Florida market.
