The first day of school is Aug. 25 for Eastern Lancaster County School District.

Superintendent Robert M. Hollister shared what is new this year for programs and technology as well as welcoming new teachers.

“Approximately 20 new teachers at all different grade levels and subjects,” he said.

For programs, Hollister said, “We are introducing a new elementary program for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).”

Every student grades Kindergarten through sixth will rotate through a STEM class experience once per week for the whole year, he said.

“At our high school we are introducing a science forensics class (think CSI) as an elective,” said Hollister. “It is so popular, we had to add sections over what was expected.”

The district anticipated they would need one to two sections but instead needed four.

For technology, computers will also be available to students to take home this year.

“This year we will have a one-to-one grade 1 through 12.”

Students in grade 7 to 12 will take their computers home with them every night, he said.

“Other than the ‘one-to-one’ expansion, we will be also introducing a bus tracking system that parents will eventually be able log-on and see the exact location of their child’s bus at all times and know if the child is on the bus…including activity and field trip runs,” said Hollister. “Pretty amazing technology.”
