At their meeting on Aug. 18, the Board of School Directors approved the district’s goals for this school year. The goals reflect the fact that a successful school district is one that continually works to improve the curriculum and instruction, and partner with families to meet students’ needs.

The first goal is to plan, adjust and evaluate the curriculum, instruction and assessment to increase student achievement. This goal has several different components which align our curriculum and instruction with the PA Core Standards. We will be supporting the implementation of the new math series in grades kindergarten through six. We will also continue to review and revise the English language arts curriculum for kindergarten through eighth grade. A scope and sequence for the science curriculum in grades five through eight will be developed based on the standards. We will also use student achievement data to identify the needs for targeted professional development for teachers throughout the district.

The second goal is to incorporate strategies in each building to maintain and/or increase student attendance and review possible policy changes to improve attendance. Data on attendance from last school year revealed that we have students in each grade who had 10 or more absences. Each absence makes it more difficult for a student to progress in his/her learning. Each building will monitor student attendance and will work with families when students miss multiple days of school. The Board of School Directors will also review its policy on approving educational trips since we have seen an increase in these requests.

Third, we plan to increase opportunities for families to be involved in their child’s learning. This will be accomplished through offering additional educational programs for families. One of the first will be on the new math series.

Our fourth goal is to provide additional training for our non-instructional staff to assist them in fulfilling their job responsibilities. Examples include instruction on the new requirements for the handling of food for our food service staff, and instruction for staff in our facilities department on the repair and maintenance of the new equipment that has been installed with the renovations completed this summer in three of our buildings.

Fifth, we will be conducting assessments of the current condition of our facilities to update the maintenance timeline for planning and budgeting. These assessments will include all parts of our buildings (including roofs) and grounds (including parking lots and sidewalks).

Our sixth goal is to continue our efforts to ensure a safe and secure learning environment. These include both structural improvements to our buildings and continued training of students and staff on how to respond to an intruder in the building.

Our last goal is to continue our efforts to use district financial resources efficiently. This includes restructuring positions where possible, evaluating contract proposals based on quality of service and cost, and pursuing additional partnerships to provide efficient services.

We look forward to a very successful school year!
