The recycling center is getting a makeover.

Recycling Services, Inc., one of our area’s most valuable environmental resources, is temporarily closed while changes are made to improve the grounds and reorganize the internal structure.

Started on Earth Day in 1971 as an offshoot of Owen J. Roberts High School Ecology Club, Recycling Services, Inc. grew from being a few random collection bins to Pennsylvania’s most comprehensive recycling collection center, as well as a leading source of alternative energy research and development. RSI founder and president James Crater, on holiday during the restructuring, has been recognized by local, state and national agencies for his dedication to environmental sustainability and education.

“We’re recycling the recycling center,” says temporary operating manager Mark Zeleznick, adding that, in addition to moving out long-standing materials and patching visible holes, the company has elected a new board of directors to oversee the ongoing changes and ensure adherence to the mission statement.

“RSI is here to accept a wide variety of recyclable materials, while keeping the processing domestic and, when at all possible, local. Re-use is the purest form of recycling, and we’ll be educating folks on more uses for their old stuff as we continue along.”

Recycling Services, Inc. is currently aiming for a mid-to-late September reopening date. New and current supporting members are encouraged to donate funds to help cover the costs of reorganization and staffing while the center is closed. Checks may be sent to Recycling Services, Inc., 365 Elm Street, Pottstown, PA 19460. RSI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
