Twin Valley High School sports teams kick back against cancer during Pink Out at Homecoming games the week of Oct. 5.

“Pink Out started four years ago as a way for the Lady Raiders Soccer Team to give back to society!” said Stephanie Gibson, Lady Raiders Soccer Mom.

Gibson said the team along with head coach Colin Kent and the parents started Pink Out. All proceeds benefits Cancer Awareness and the Susan G. Kolman Foundation.

She hopes this teaches the players and students of all ages “to give back somehow to society and not always focus on the Me Me Me attitude in this world.”

“During Pink Out attendees can walk about enjoy the special concessions, raffle and silent auction and of course enjoy the sporting event planned for the specific evening,” said Gibson. “Each team is supposed to try and come up with ways in which money can be made and donated to the benefit.”

“The Lady Raiders Soccer team started Pink Out four years ago and it has spread to the entire Athletic Department,” she said.

For the future, Gibson said they would like to include the entire Twin Valley area with all schools participating at the elementary level up to the high school.

“Coach Colin Kent and the Lady Raiders Soccer team deserve special recognition for their efforts and getting the ball rolling and continued success with Pink Out Week,” said Gibson. “After all we would all like to Help Kick Cancer in the Butt for good!”

This is the first year Pink Out is also Homecoming week.

“This wasn’t planned; it just happened to fall on the same week! It should be a great turnout so I think Homecoming week is a definite plus,” she said. “Our Athletic Director, Mr. John Guiseppe is the overseer of all games and activities!”

Guiseppe said Pink Out is a word they use to promote awareness about breast cancer and is held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Everyone on the field and in the stands are encouraged to wear pink.

“Sports teams on the field wear pink to show their support which spreads into the stands,” he said.

Parents sell baked goods and fundraise for breast cancer research.

“For high school students especially, it’s very important to teach the importance of raising money for a cause and to be conscientious of the things out there like cancer,” said Guiseppe. “Find a cause and find out what they can do to help a cause.”

Guiseppe said students also see the importance of getting everyone together, parents, teams and student, to all fight one cause and see how it spread. They all see the need and see how to make a difference.

Those involved in Pink Out include sports teams, parents and Boosters, and student groups at Twin Valley, he said.

“You have multiple groups all coming together, all helping one cause,” said Guiseppe.
