Frecon Farms has kicked off their annual “Pick your own fruit” – community members now have the chance to explore 30 acres of land and their own apples, pears, pumpkins, and other fruits that are grown in the orchard.

The event lasts until Sunday, Nov. 1, and features different offerings and events such as live music on the weekends, fresh pressed apple cider, a kid’s zone, and a picnic area where families can bring and enjoy their own food.

With Halloween season quickly approaching, the Frecons will also has a Halloween party on Oct. 31, featuring music by the Manatawny Creek Ramblers.

For adults, they offer hard cider, in which there are four different kinds on draft every weekend.

Joshua Smith, who actively works with the orchard on a daily basis, hopes to educate those in the community on where their food is really coming from. He feels opening the orchard to others is rewarding and educational experience, explaining, “We don’t just take our fruit to them, but invite them back up to our orchard to show them the start of everything.”

Included with all the family-fun activities is also a picture contest where community members have the chance to recreate the Frecon Farms logo. The Pick Your Own participants have three categories to choose from; most original, most accurate, and most comical. Winners of each category will win local, fresh, cage free Thanksgiving turkey.

“It’s a really cool and easy way to treat 15+ people to a Thanksgiving meal”, says Smith.

Frecon Farms Pick Your Own was originally started up in 2003, and the company has been trying to maintain it ever since. Smith feels it is a good way to get fresh food, and you know where it comes from.

Smith believes visiting Frecon’s Pick Your Own is something everyone in the community should try out, and says, “There’s no better way to spend the weekend in the fall in Pennsylvania than in an orchard, it’s a pretty special place.”
