The Kutztown Rotary Club honored Emily Fenstermacher and Sarah Betts as students of the month on Oct. 7 in ceremonies at the Kutztown Tavern.
Each month during the school year, Kutztown Rotary recognizes students who have demonstrated superior academic achievement as well as contributions to their schools and communities. Each was nominated by her guidance counselor and will receive a 50 dollar reward as part of the recognition.
Emily Fenstermacher, daughter of Lori and Steve Fenstermacher of Lenhartsville, is a senior at Kutztown Area High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society, was a state medalist in the Science Olympiad and is captain of the cross country team. She is also a member of the outdoors club, the Leo club, the tennis team, track and field team, Broadway ensemble, choir and rifle team.
She accumulates 20 hours of community service a year with organizations such as Wreaths Across America, Friend, Inc., Kutztown Gun Club, the Kutztown Folk Festival and Kutztown Area High School.
Sarah Betts, daughter of Dr. Thomas and Michelle Betts of Mertztown, is a senior at Brandywine Heights High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the German National Honor Society. She is in the marching band as drum major, is in the jazz band and participated in county and district band. She is co-president of juggling club and secretary for debate club, with which she won the Mock Trial Award for best advocate. She is treasurer of the Reading Olympics and cocaptain of the tennis team.
In her out of school time, she is a member of the Reading Symphony Youth Orchestra, a volunteer for the Brandywine Community Library, an altar server at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a volunteer instructor at Brandywine Tennis Camp. During the Kutztown Folk Festival, she works at the lemonade stand.
