Customers Bank has announced that its Veterans Day fundraiser featuring guest speaker Robert O’Neill raised more than $140,000 to support local veterans.
More than 600 guests, including veterans and members of the local business community, gathered at the Crowne Plaza in Wyomissing on Nov. 11 to honor and support the men and women who served in the U.S. military. All proceeds from the Veterans Day event will benefit Customers Banks’ efforts to build a veterans center in Berks County.
“This Veterans Day, we wanted to make a difference in the lives of the local men and women who bravely fought for our country,” said Dick Ehst, president and chief operating officer of Customers Bank. “We hope that by hosting this event each year, we can help to provide our Berks County veterans with the support they need and deserve.”
The event featured a first-person account from former U.S. Navy SEAL Robert O’Neill, who was part of SEAL Team 6 during the May 2011 raid on al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. As point man during the mission, Mr. O’Neill is known for firing the shots that killed Bin Laden.
In his 16 years of service, Mr. O’Neill earned two Silver Stars and four Bronze Stars with Valor, in addition to several other decorations. The colors were presented by India Battery, 3rd Battalion, 14th Regiment, USMC.
