DOUGLASS (Mont.) >> An explosion in the backyard of a Boyertown home sent one man to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Douglass Township Police as well as Gilbertsville Fire and Rescue Service and Gilbertsville Community Ambulance Service responded to 804 Rhoads Avenue for a report of a man injured in an explosion in his backyard, according to police reports.

Initial investigation revealed that 42-year-old Kenneth Bonkoski had been moving items out of a detached shed to the rear of the property when a substance inside a five gallon bucket ignited, causing an explosion and injuring Bonkoski, police said.

The substance has yet to be determined.

Bonkoski was transported by Med Evac helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries is unknown.

The Montgomery County Bomb Squad and Montgomery County Department of Public Safety HazMat teams were called to the scene where they determined it was safe.

Douglass Township Police, Pennsylvania State Police and Montgomery County Detectives are investigating the incident.
