The Union Township Board of Supervisors unanimously approved on Nov. 16 to advertise its 2016 budget of $1,655,716, with no tax increase.
The township millage rate will remain at 3.65 mills.
Annual taxes on a property assessed at $100,000 are $365.
Board members are considering the use of speed bumps and gutters on Garey Road to stop the vehicular speeding.
Supervisor Nelson L. Ott, Jr., said he met recently with six to 10 Garey Road residents.
He said the residents are fed up with the student and parent drivers who speed on their way to and from the High School.
“You come up with – whatever you need to come up with,” said board Chairman Donald E. Basile to township Engineer Thomas Unger.
Board members said drivers are now running through the four-way stop signs installed last February at Garey Road and Lanie Drive, which also haven’t resolved the speeding situation.
Ott said the township’s public works employees will soon paint stop bars at the four-way intersection.
The board is undecided on how to proceed with a new township map and directory.
They said a for-profit company is soliciting township businesses to advertise on a free township map, which also includes political advertisements.
Board members said that although they approved in February for township Manager Michelle Kehoe to proceed with the map, they did not realize it would involve soliciting businesses.
“The township should not be in the business – with political ads on the back,” said Ott.
“We’re going down a slippery slope – some businesses may be left out,” adding that seven business owners have recently contacted him, soon after his business was solicited and he learned of the publication.
Supervisor Terry Kennedy said the board is making a big deal about nothing.
“Advertise the township,” said Kennedy.
“We would be remiss if we didn’t offer the businesses an opportunity to advertise.”
Ott said 2,500 copies have already been printed of the paper-size publication.
