Abraxas employee Steven Davis, 26, of Fleetwood, was assaulted by two male teens while working at the Abraxas Academy Youth Detention Center in New Morgan Township Jan. 9.
Robert Battle Jr., 15, West Lawn, and Herminio Caraballo, 16, Allentown, were arrested and charged as adults with attempted homicide, which was approved by the Berks County DA’s Office.
On Jan. 9, at about 6 a.m., Davis was working at the Abraxas Academy Youth Detention Center, 1000 Academy Drive, New Morgan Township, Berks County.
According to State Police Reading, Davis was walking in a hallway when Caraballo summoned Davis to his door and asked for a band aid. Davis retrieved a band aid and went back to the room and unlocked the door to hand him the band aid. Caraballo and his roommate Battle rushed Davis, began assaulting him and forced him into their room. The door shut locking them inside and they took his radio. The teens continued to assault Davis by punching and kicking him about his head and body. They also tried to strangle Davis and made statements that they would kill him. Davis convinced the teens that he could help them with their escape in order to stop them from assaulting him.
About 30 minutes later, they allowed Davis to use his radio in that someone had to use the bathroom. When a staff member approached the door Davis was able to yell that he was inside the room.
Additional staff members were called and the door was opened. Battle exited the room first with keys he had taken from Davis in an attempt to escape from the facility. Caraballo exited the room holding a pen to Davis’s neck and was threatening to kill him. Caraballo led Davis along the hallway and eventually staff members were able to restrain both juveniles, according to State Police.
Davis was treated at Reading Hospital for his injuries.
