Dr. Kenneth Hawkinson, president of Kutztown University, presented the first ever President’s Citation on Jan. 20. The award was given to Ryan Baron, a biology/pre-med major from Garwood, New Jersey. Baron recently completed his sophomore year as an offensive lineman for the Golden Bear football team.
Baron received the President’s Citation for his heroic actions on Monday, Aug. 24, the first day of fall classes at Kutztown University.
Upon exiting the west side of Boehm Science Center that afternoon, Baron noticed a female student in medical distress on the landing. Having worked as an emergency medical technician during the summer, he took immediate action, administering emergency medical care until University Police and the local EMS team arrived.
In addition, due to his knowledge as an EMT, Baron made recommendations to the university administration to enhance resources for similar incidents in the future.
The President’s Citation was established last fall and is presented at the discretion of the Kutztown University president. The recipient must be a current student who has performed an exceptional act of service that directly benefits the well-being of others.
