Garden Spot Village ALIVE (Active Lifelong Learners in Vital Engagements) and Eastern Mennonite Seminary at Lancaster invite the community to an in-depth course titled “Grappling with the Gospel.” The six-session class will meet on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 8, 15, 22 and 29, and March 7 and 14, on the campus of Garden Spot Village at 433 S. Kinzer Ave. in New Holland.
“This course will grapple with often-times competing claims of modern culture and the Gospel as to our values, loyalties and priorities as followers of Jesus,” said Chet Yoder, director of pastoral services at Garden Spot Village.
The instructor for the course will be Dr. Kenneth Sensenig, who has served with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) for 20 years, most currently as assistant director of the MCC East Coast regional office. He is also a licensed minister in the Lancaster Mennonite Conference.
The Sermon on the Mount, recorded in Matthew’s gospel, will provide the springboard to consider Jesus’s invitation to contemporary Christians. The biblical narrative, mingled with personal and global stories, will encourage participants to invite the Jesus of the Sermon on the Mount into 21st century American life in an election year. The Expanded Life by Myron Augburger will provide a framework.
Weekly readings will be provided, and there is a registration fee. Garden Spot Village residents may register for the course at Resident Services. Members of the general public may register by calling 717-355-6159. Please register by Monday, Feb. 1.
