Kutztown School District Superintendent Kathy Metrick will retire after four years at the district.

Kutztown School Board President Carl Ziegler announced during the Monday night school board meeting that Metrick plans to retire in October.

Appointed to the position in 2012, Metrick has left a positive impression on the district, and the rest of the board as a whole, said board member Al Darion. He believes the district to be on a positive trajectory.

“Thank you, for everything,” said Randy Burch, board vice president.

“And from all of the students, thank you,” added Student Representative Tyler Akers.

“This has been an absolutely wonderful experience,” said Metrick.

The board will consult with Berks County Intermediate Unit with their educational search agency in order to locate a candidate for the position. Board members expect the process to cost about $2,000.

In other business, Metrick announced that beginning on Feb. 15, a stretch of Normal Street in front of Kutztown Elementary School will be closed for construction work which is expected to take six months.

The district does not expect that the construction will negatively disrupt traffic going to and from the school, but accommodations will be made where necessary.

Metrick also announced that Kutztown School District student Krystal Nolte won a spot on the State Jazz Vocal Ensemble. They will perform at the PA Music Educator Association Conference in Hershey.

The board’s next meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 in the high school library.
