Steve George recently announced his candidacy for the Democratic candidate for State Representative in District 187.

“Legislative Per Diems are taxpayer-funded perks that each representative can receive, as long as they are 50 miles from Harrisburg,” said George, in a statement. “It is just another benefit that most people in the state don’t see, and it’s on top of lucrative pay and benefits. One of my main goals in this election is to address the issue of government overspending and waste. Last year, even though we had no budget, the current representative of 187 claimed over $10,000 in per-diems. That is something that should outrage every resident of 187. While I can understand a representative from Erie, PA claiming these per-diems, it’s hard to swallow when our district is only 60 miles from Harrisburg. For the average person, that may be their work commute, and are they getting paid back?”

“While I want to change the system in Harrisburg that has been lucrative to politicians and a burden to taxpayers, I realistically know I can’t do it instantly,” George continued. “With that, barring any legal issues, I have decided that when I am elected, I will claim all per diems available, and donate the equal amount back to organizations in my district in need. These organizations will range from Volunteer Fire Companies, School Booster Clubs, 4H Clubs, Historical Societies, Food Banks or any other non-profit in the 187. I will be transparent in these claims, and make sure everybody knows when I get them and who they are going to.”

“It’s time for change, and I want to show the people that I am in this to represent them,” George concluded. “I hope people can realize that this, my firm stance on three-term limits and the rest of my platform shows that.”

District 187 includes Western Lehigh County (Upper Macungie, North Whitehall, Lowhill, Lynn, Heidelberg and Weisenberg Twps.) and Eastern Berks County (Maxatawny and Kutztown Borough).

Gary Day currently holds the seat, and is currently serving his fourth term.
