Hamburg High School art students competed in Fastlane Art, a billboard art competition and exhibit by the Berks Arts Council.

“I wanted to give them an opportunity to be a part of the fastlane art experience. It is an exciting art opportunity and a chance to learn more about billboard design,” said Hamburg High School Art Teacher Rebecca Dommel.

Dommel explained that students and adults submit work to the competition and work is selected to display on billboards in Berks County. A selection of prizes are awarded. About 10 Hamburg students in grades 9-12 submitted work.

“Students created their own artwork in a special format for billboard display in their choice of subject matter and art materials,” said Dommel. “A group of students participated and their work came out great. Prizes were awarded to a selection of students in the county.”

Art was displayed at the Crowne Plaza earlier this month and at Freedom Auto Group Feb. 18.

MaryKate Haas’s artwork will be displayed on digital billboards in Berks County for Fastlane Art. The Hamburg High School Art Departmet was one of three schools chosen for a monetary award Feb. 18 at Freedom Auto Group.

“I liked being a part of the competition and atmosphere of displaying my artwork in the event,” said Hamburg junior MaryKate Haas.

Hamburg artists will also display at The County Art Show at the GoggleWorks Feb. 27 to March 13.

“The County Art Show is an annual high school art show and competition held at the GoggleWorks. Students display work according to a selection of categories and are eligible to for awards,” said Dommel.

A selection of student work will be on display from grades 9-12. There will be drawings, paintings, ceramics, and mixed media work on display, she said.

“It is important for students to engage in shows and competitions with their peers. It is a beautiful display each year and is very inspiring to everyone. It encourages creativity and engages students in different activities. I hope students inspire each other through this experience,” said Dommel.

“I hope students learn to value talent and hard work,” she said.
