BOYERTOWN >> The community celebrated the spring season on a beautifully warm day Saturday with the Coming Out of Hibernation event.
Building a Better Boyertown organized the outdoor affair which included food vendors, a chili cook-off and rides on The Colebrookdale Railroad. Building a Better Boyertown, also known as BBB, is a nonprofit organization that promotes downtown revitalization. Emily Jones, promotions chairwoman on the BBB board, said more than 400 people came out to the springtime celebration. Jones said the Coming out of Hibernation event has been celebrated in the borough for several years and it’s named in reference to the area’s mascot being the bear.
“It’s all about waking up and having fun,” she said adding that the occasion gets residents active outdoors.
A part of East Philadelphia Avenue was sectioned off for the event to allow people to explore the many happenings. KooKoo, the cartoon magician, performed tricks and illusions for the crowd. Children had lots of fun sliding and bouncing inside a moon bounce obstacle course. People tasted various savory recipes during a chili cook-off competition.
“This is the first event leading up to the 150th anniversary (celebration),” Jones said.
Boyertown celebrates 150 years of being an incorporated borough this year. Jones said the big anniversary will be celebrated on May 20, 21 and 22. On the first day of celebration, a time capsule will be opened. There will be a parade and block party on May 21 and a nondenominational religious ceremony on May 22.
