The Boyertown Alumni Marching Unit is marching on towards its 40th Annual Spring Concert this Saturday, April 30.
“Each of the songs in the concert, except ‘I Am the Doctor’ and ‘Ode for Trumpet’ have been played previously in a major concert,” said Dennis Weller, Band Captain. “For example, ‘St. Louis Blues,’ ‘Russian Sailors Dance,’ and ‘Colossus of Columbia’ were all played in the first concert in 1977.”
The concert starts at 7 p.m. at Boyertown Junior High West in the Donald J. Kuszyk Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for students, and those under 6 will be admitted for free. Tickets will be available at the door.
Fifteen conductors and guest conductors will be participating, such as Dennis Weller – the unit’s current Band Capitan, Don Kuszyk – Assistant Band Captain, Nancy Mest – Assistant Band Captain and an Elementary Band Director in the Pottstown School District, Mike Agatone – the current Band Director at Boyertown Jr. High East Center and Dennis Frey – a past band captain for the alumni band and the present B.A.M.U. Music Librarian.
Other guests include Craig Fryer, Bill Helmer, Dean Houck, Mike Jordan – current Boyertown Jr. High West Band Director, Dan Kerchetsky – retired Boyertown Area Sr. High School Choral Director, Brian Langdon – current Boyertown Area Sr. High School Band Director, Kathy Mumie – current Instrumental Music Instructor in BASD Elementary Schools, Dennis Rhoads, Dana Stauffer – a retired Boyertown Elementary Band Director and a past alumni unit Band Capitan, Steve Yoder – current Band Director in BASD Elementary Schools.
Frey will kick things off with “Saint Louis Blue March” featuring the band front, to be followed by the Star-Spangled Banner; Weller will conclude the evening with “Saints In Concert.” There will be 19 songs played, in all, with an intermission to break things up.
Formed in 1976 to commemorate the country’s bicentennial, the unit has performed many special concerts throughout the years.
In addition to Boyertown alumni, adults who now reside in the Boyertown Area School District are welcome to join the unit. Visit <www.bamu.webs.com> for more information.
