POTTSTOWN >> The first-ever outdoor farmers market in the borough drew crowds of people to downtown Thursday afternoon.
The Pottstown Farm & Artisan Regional Market, or FARM for short, celebrated its opening day with a Cinco De Mayo fiesta. A fresh salsa demonstration, chili cook-off and Latin dance demonstration allowed the community to partake in the Mexican holiday while also exploring the vendors at the market.
“I’m very excited. Our vendors are running out of products,” said Sheila Dugan, Pottstown Downtown Improvement District Authority executive director and Pottstown FARM market manager.
Dugan said the vendors plan to bring twice as many items to next week’s market. The outdoor farmers market will be every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the 200 block of High Street. Products available included flowers, honey, meats and more.
The market also had several educational activities available to the public. Mosaic Community Land Trust had a table with supplies so children could make arts and crafts. There was a wellness tent where people received free blood pressure screenings. The Federation of Pottstown Teachers gave out free children’s books to kids to encourage reading.
“We want to continue to instill a love of reading in our kids,” said Beth Yoder, federation president.
