The Building a Better Boyertown tree committee took to Philadelphia Avenue and North Reading Avenue to plant seven replacement trees on Saturday, April 30.

Over 15 volunteers from Boy Scout troop #503 came out to install the replacement trees and remove the old stumps. A generous donation by the James K. and Nancy Lang Boyer Family Fund of the Berks County Community Foundation covered the cost of the trees and are part of the greening and beautification efforts of Building A Better Boyertown.

The Tree Committee used a new planting technique with two of the replacement trees, planted in the Town Center Parking lot. We planted bare root trees instead of containerized trees, supplied by Harmony Hill Nursery, Ltd.

“This technique will help the tree roots become established more quickly, without some of the root girdling that occurs with containerized stock,” explains Chuck Lowe, BBB tree committee chair. “We’ve also incorporated soil amendments (mycorrhiza) mixed into the soil to help increase water and nutrient absorption, helping to combat the stresses put on urban trees.”
