BOYERTOWN >> A Boyertown Area School Board member used the occasion of Flag Day on Tuesday to propose that a U.S. flag and copy of the Bill of Rights be placed in every district classroom.

Board member Clay Breece made a motion on Tuesday to supply every classroom with an standard American Flag measuring 2-feet-by-3-feet or 3-feet-by-5-feet.

These new flags would replace the smaller flags that some classrooms currently utilize.

“You shouldn’t have to look for the flag – it should be the first thing you see when you enter a classroom,” Breece said.

The motion was approved unanimously by the school board with little discussion.

Breece then made another motion to post the Bill of Rights on card stock paper in every classroom at the junior high and high school levels. The posting would be placed alongside the flag in the front of every classroom.

“It has nothing to do with curriculum and everything to do with being an American,” added board member Robert Caso, who was in favor of the motion.

On behalf of the administration, Superintendent Richard Faidley said the administration is very supportive of promoting the Bill of Rights but would like to come up with other recommendations for posting it in school buildings.

Board member Donna Usavage thanked Breece for the motion but questioned, from an administrative perspective, if this was the best way to go about it.

“There’s more we could do to drive home the point of being an American,” said board member Stephen Elsier, expressing his support to “plus it up.”

District Chief Academic Officer Melissa Woodard informed the board that the district does honor Constitution Day every year in all grade levels.

The Bill of Rights motion was unanimously approved by the school board.

Both of these motions took place during the board comments segment of the meeting on Tuesday night and are expected to be discussed at the next board meeting on July 19.
