As people get older, they tend to stop doing things they once loved, due to declining physical abilities or lack of interest. At Chestnut Knoll, the goal is to keep residents engaged and entertained in life, and they are proud to offer an array of opportunities for seniors to get involved with social and physical activities at the community with their new friends, or to expand into the Boyertown community and stay connected to their roots.

“It is important for the community to understand that our residents not only remain active, but also remain contributing members of this town, which just celebrated its 150th Anniversary,” said Shawn Barndt, executive director.

The residents maintain a level of community involvement, through a variety of offerings at Chestnut Knoll. Each year they participate in the Relay for Life and all of its fundraisers held during the year, such as an event at the Greshville Inn and Chicken BBQ sales. They also have fundraisers for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, which include their annual Beef and Beer, Painting Parties and dinner at Doc Watson’s. In the past, they’ve also held indoor Yard Sales at the community, which have benefited the Boyertown Salvation Army, the Boyertown Town Clock and the Boyertown Fire Departments.

Outside of their fundraising efforts, the seniors at Chestnut Knoll have opportunities to participate in Walks in the Park with the Boyertown community or a Garden Club with the Pottstown Garden Club. They can also join Bingo Walks with the Boyertown Wellness Council, which promote fitness in senior citizens as they walk around a track picking bingo numbers to win prizes, and a Men’s Club, which allows any senior gentleman at the community to get together once a week in a group setting, meeting at various locations such as the Friendship Hook and Ladder Fire Company.

“Working with members of the Boyertown community for any of these outings or special events with our seniors is just another example of how bringing the Boyertown community into the Chestnut Knoll community creates a win-win experience for everyone involved,” said Barndt. “Chestnut Knoll is very connected to the Boyertown community and we are so grateful that our residents can remain active and involved with some of their favorite hobbies and pastimes.”

If you’re interested to see firsthand how the residents at Chestnut Knoll are staying active and healthy in their senior years, join them for a walk in the park on Saturday, July 9 at 9:30 a.m. These walks are held monthly in the summer, sponsored by Chestnut Knoll, the Boyertown Lions Club, Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club and St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Meet at the Rohrbach Pavilion in the Boyertown Community Park and walk the trail. The walking trail is handicap accessible and all ages are invited. Children are encouraged to attend, as long as they have adult supervision. Healthy snacks are provided.

Chestnut Knoll can pick you up for the walk; however, you must reserve a ride in advance. For more information about Chestnut Knoll and their involvement in the community, or to reserve a ride to the park for the walk, please call 610-473-8066.
