Rhythm in Motion Dance Company, Kutztown, took their dance shoes on the high seas.
A group of 25 dancers performed on a for Royal Caribbean cruise ship Grandeur of the Seas on June 19, while at sea, sailing June 18 to 23 to Bermuda.
“We were, of course, very excited when we found out we had been chosen to perform,” said Kelly Corman of RIM.
RIM choreographed a 45 minute production number called “Vacations,” blending 35 songs from decades of music, all genres of music and dance styles. The dancers, ranging in age from 6 to 22, performed a combination of tap, lyrical, hip hop, tumbling, modern, contemporary, jazz and country line dance.
“It’s a great mix of music and dance styles,” said Corman before the group set sail.
“We are really excited and honored by this opportunity, and are looking forward to the experience of performing on a professional stage in international waters. We are also really excited about the cruise experience and all the fun we will have in Bermuda as well!”
Corman likes to offer the students at RIM a lot of different performing opportunities.
“I think these experiences teach them the value of discipline, commitment, working together as a team for a common goal and the value of achievement. I chose to have them audition for the cruise performance because I think it’s really important that the students have the opportunity to ‘earn and be awarded”‘ the privilege to perform for a professional company and work and learn from professionals on board the ship.”
She feels that the students learn much from these types of experiences.
“They, of course, learn a lot about dance and performance, but also the value of hard work, dedication, respect and striving to obtain higher levels of achievement. These are really valuable lessons not only in dance, but in all aspects of life,” said Corman.
