The Hamburg American Legion Post 527 shows their patriotism by creating a large American flag with roof shingles.

“We needed a new roof anyhow, so I talked to the people at Bachman’s Roofing (in Wernersville) to see if they had red, white and blue shingles which they just came out with,” said Post Commander Jeff Marsh. “Instead of just doing a red, white and blue scheme, we turned it into a flag between their computer and our design. Got it all done and it looks good.”

Marsh said they wanted the building to be patriotic since they are the American Legion.

“We’re patriotic here,” said Marsh. “Hopefully it’ll be a landmark everybody will know, the flag on the roof.”

The American flag is 16 by 32 feet.

“It’s really big. You can see it from the road,” he said. “Hopefully it lasts for 30 years.”

He felt pretty good when he saw the completed flag on the roof.

“It’s like leaving a legacy. I designed it. I wanted to do something that was going to last a long time after I’m gone,” said Marsh.

The American Legion would like local families to contact them when a military veteran returns home from deployment.

“When they get back into town here, there are things we can do for them, have a picnic,” he said. “We can help when they come back.”

Upcoming events include the Legion Yard Sale on July 16 and the Poker Run is Aug. 6.
