St. John’s Gernant’s in Leesport added some “eye candy dessert” to their annual pig roast by including a car show for this year’s event on June 25.

Mother Nature cooperated and delivered a nice, warm, sunny, but not humid, Saturday for the first weekend of the summer. Approximately 50 cars, trucks and a motorcycle participated in the show, a very good turnout for a first time event.

St. John’s Gernant’s Church Pastor Fran Merkel said, “I was delighted with all the cars that were here all in one place. I have long enjoyed antique and classic cars because my dad, while he was living, had thirteen antique or classic cars of his own. My favorite of dad’s was a 1922 Model T Ford, but he had others that were special to me as well.”

The Car Show and Pig Roast was held on Saturday, June 25th in the church grove. Proceeds from the event will support the ministry at St. John’s Gernant’s Church.

Three winners were selected from the many cars entered on Saturday. They were Paul Seward of Reading who won the Participant’s Choice trophy for his bright yellow 1932 Ford Roadster, Jim Schadler of Mohrsville who won the Pastor’s Choice trophy for his 1930 Chevy Coupe and Kurt Neiman of Leesport who won the Fun Vote trophy for his Dave Kelly replica 1965 Ford Mustang bodied modified stock car.

Food and drink were available for purchase, including a platter featuring pulled pork from the pig roasted by John Lutz of Mohrsville.

The success of the initial event already has organizers planning and participants hoping for a second annual edition next year.
