Boyertown business owner tackles suspect in theft of donation jar

BOYERTOWN >> A many who allegedly stole a donation jar was tackled by the business owner, police said.

Alexander Krass, 24, was arrested Monday after police responded to Rita’s Water Ice, 309 E. Philadelphia Ave., for a reported theft. The owner of the business had made the call to police at around 4 p.m., indicating that he had the suspect on the ground in the rear alley, according to court documents.

When police arrived, they saw Krass on the ground with the owner on top of him. The owner told police that he ran after Krass when he stole the Alex’s Lemonade Stand donations container. The jar contained $5.19.

Witnesses told police that they observed Krass speak with an employee at Rita’s and then take the container. Krass then allegedly placed the jar inside his jacket and ran from the business. The witnesses stated they then ran after him, along with the owner.

Krass was then placed in custody and police found him to be in possession of a small cloth purse owned by another victim. The purse contained Apple earbuds and $6 in cash, police said.

Krass has been charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property and theft from a motor vehicle. He was arraigned on June 27 before District Judge Kyley L. Scott and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 6 before District Judge Michael J. Hartman. Bail was set at $5,000.
