State Police: Female driver taken into custody following DUI checkpoint

Between July 1 at 10 p.m. and July 2 at 3 a.m., State Police conducted a stationary sobriety checkpoint on Route 61 in the Hamburg Borough.

Approximately 200 motorists were contacted, resulting in one female being taken into custody for suspicion of DUI.

Additionally, one male was cited for driving with a suspended license and one female received multiple traffic citations for equipment violations.

The PA State Police will continue to utilized both stationary and roving DUI patrols in an effort to reduce the number of people that are operating vehicles on the roadways within this commonwealth while impaired by drugs and/or alcohol.

Police seek information in Walmart theft

On July 4, State Police responded to the report of a theft from the Walmart located at 1800 Tilden Ridge Drive, in Tilden Township.

In the commission of the crime, the actor removed a 32-inch Vizio Smart TV from Walmart without paying. The actor is described as a white/Hispanic male in his mid-30s, 5 feet 10 inches, dark hair in a ponytail and wearing a black shirt, red shorts and an orange hat.

The actor fled the scene in an older model tan sedan, possibly an Oldsmobile. The TV is valued at $198.

Police investigate Perry Twp. fire

The State Police at Reading have investigated a fire that occurred on Mohrsville Road in Perry Township on June 29 at 9:06 a.m.

Crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the residence. Entry was made and the fire was suppressed before it spread throughout the house. The residence was vacant at the time and no injuries were reported.

The fire damaged several rooms of the house. It was caught quickly due to a passing motorist calling 911. The damage estimate is $75,000.

The investigation showed that the origin was in a second floor room. The ignition was due to an overloaded electrical line. Multiple window air conditioning units were on at the time, along with other devices.

The fire has been ruled accidental.

Scottish Inn burglary under investigation

State Police at Hamburg are investigating a burglary that occurred between June 25 at 6 p.m. and July 5 at 6 a.m. at Scottish Inn, on Roadside Drive in Upper Bern Township.

In the commission of the crime, actor(s) arrived on scene and gained entrance to a second floor closet located south of the south unit of the Scottish Inn. The actor(s) removed 15 flat screen televisions valued at $300 each and four dorm-sized refrigerators valued at $120 each.

The actor(s) then proceeded to room 119 and forced open the door to gain access, removing tools from that location including a Bosch Brute Demolition Hammer, with cart and bits, valued at $2,400; a Chicago Electric impact demolition hammer valued at $1,400; a Briggs and Stratten power washer valued at $450; a 200 foot heavy duty extension cord valued at $160; and a Makita Sawz All valued at $100.

The total value of the property stolen is $9,490.

Driver crashes on Old 22 after falling asleep at wheel

On July 1 at 2:31 p.m., State Police at Hamburg responded to a one vehicle crash on Old 22 in Windsor Township.

The crash occurred as driver David Miller, Jr., 31, of Hamburg, was traveling west on Old 22. Miller fell asleep and exited the right side of the roadway, striking a guide wire to a utility pole. The driver then struck an embankment as the vehicle continued west off the right side of the road. He swerved left back onto the roadway and crossed both lanes of travel, spinning counterclockwise. The vehicle started to overturn and struck a utility pole on the south side of Old 22. Miller’s vehicle came to a final rest facing east on its passenger side on the south berm.

Miller was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital by Hamburg Ambulance for suspected minor injury. He has been cited for the incident.
