Leesport man arrested in robbery

On June 24 at approximately 12:30 p.m., a 19 year old male victim, of Fleetwood, reported that just after cashing his paycheck, he was ordered into a vehicle in Fleetwood, by Eugenio Avilez, 21, of Leesport. While inside the vehicle, Avilez is said to have demanded the victim’s wallet under the threat of having his “squad” physically beat the victim if he did not comply.

Avilez kept approximately $547 of the victim’s money as a partial payment for the sale of a shotgun, which never came to fruition. Avilez continued to demand additional money he felt was owed to him for the sale that never happened.

On the evening of July 1, Avilez threatened additional violence and told the victim that he was on his way to the Richmond Township residence where the victim was staying, to collect an additional sum of money from him. Avilez was taken into custody without incident in the vicinity of his Leesport Borough residence by members of the Northern Berks Regional and Bern Township Police.

Avilez was transferred to the custody of the Fleetwood Police for processing before being released to the custody of Berks County Sheriff’s Department at the Central Processing Center to await preliminary arraignment.

The accused was remanded to the Berks County Prison in lieu of $100,000 cash bail.
