Registration is now open for the Schuylkill River Heritage Area’s Ride for the River, a new bike ride that will take cyclists from Pottstown to Reading and back along the Schuylkill River Trail.

The ride, planned for Sept. 24, will include options for 16-mile and 40-mile routes. It will begin and end at the Sly Fox Can Jam Festival, where, after the ride, participants can kick back and enjoy food, Sly Fox beer and the festival’s line up of free, live music.

Ride for the River serves as a fundraiser for the Schuylkill River Heritage Area, which builds, maintains and promotes the Schuylkill River Trail, in partnership with a number of other organizations. It also provides an opportunity for the Heritage Area to draw attention to a section of the trail it owns and maintains.

“Our goal in hosting Ride for the River is to get people out on the Schuylkill River Trail,” said Silas Chamberlin, executive director of the Schuylkill River Heritage Area. “This is a safe and enjoyable ride, with rest stops and ride support that make it possible for cyclists of all experience levels to enjoy this beautiful section of the trail.”

The Sly Fox Can Jam Festival is held at Sly Fox Brewing Company, located on Circle of Progress Drive, in Pottstown. Sly Fox describes the festival as “a free day of amazing music in the beautiful pastures adjoining the brewery, accentuated by one of the largest KanJam(R) tournaments on the planet.”

The ride will include a short on-road stretch from the brewery to the Schuylkill River Trail. From there, participants in the 40-mile ride will pedal to Riverfront Park in Reading where they can rest up, have a snack and refill water bottles before making the return trip to Pottstown.

Less experienced riders may prefer the 16-mile option, which will take them to the Union Township Recreation Area for a rest stop before circling back to Pottstown.

All riders will receive a voucher for complimentary food and beer. Ride support and complimentary pre-ride bicycle safety checks will be provided by TriCounty Bicycles, of Pottstown. All proceeds benefit the Schuylkill River Heritage Area.
