Kutztown School District welcomes a new superintendent, George Fiore, who started Aug. 1 as assistant to Superintendent Kathy Metrick until her retirement on Sept. 30. He will become superintendent Oct. 1.

Kutztown School Board appointed Fiore as the new superintendent in May. Fiore was principal of Wilson High School and an adjunct professor in the Secondary Education Department at Kutztown University. He is also a KU alumnus.

“He will be a great leader for the district,” said Metrick.

Renovations continue at the high school. Several of the classrooms will be relocated until the renovations are completed.

“We are also on the homestretch of our high school renovations on the 1959 section of the building,” said Metrick. “The construction project is slated to be completed Oct. 31, but we will have access to much of the new part of the building for the opening of school.”

There will also be a schedule change at the middle school.

“The middle school will have a slightly different schedule this year linking Reading and Language Arts more closely together,” she said.

What should students and parents expect on the first day of school on Aug. 29?

“Excitement,” said Metrick. “We are always thrilled to welcome our students back to school.”

Metrick said that there are growing opportunities for internships and other partnerships at the high school level.

“At the elementary schools, staff members are proud to say that we continue to make a concerted effort to have fun while teaching and make learning fun for our students,” she said. “We find it humbling that many of our students are actually sad when they leave us for the summer and happy when they return in the Fall. We strive to make sure that both our students and their families know that we as a school, genuinely care for our students.”

“When they come home that first day, we want them to tell their parents that they LOVED it and can’t wait to go back tomorrow,” said Metrick.

Her advise for students is to bring enthusiasm and an open mind.

“Students should plan to be actively involved in the learning process to get the most our of their education. If you have questions, please ask. Someone is always available to help.”
