Lightning struck a Greenwich Township corn crib and barn and lead to a fire that completely destroyed the building on Aug. 11 at 9:45 p.m.

State Police Reading investigated the fire that occurred at 377 Dietrich Valley Road, Greenwich Township.

“The investigation showed the fire originated at the metal roof of the building and that the ignition source was a lightning strike that energized the roof causing the wood frame to ignite,” reported State Police Trooper Janssen Herb in a police release. “The structure was burned to the ground in minutes.”

The detached corn crib and barn was completely destroyed by fire. The building damaged the outside of the nearby house. Estimated cost of the loss is $80,000.

There were no injuries reported.
