The Berks County 4-H Swine Club hosts its first annual Benefit Barrow. Proceeds from the Aug. 20 4-H Round Up auction at the Kutztown Fair benefits the Bret Hansley Jr. family from Hamburg.

Michele Brown, assistant Berks County 4-H Swine Club leader, said the Swine Club started the Benefit Barrow this year. The club will decide on a local individual, family or charity to support each year.

This year, the club chose to support the family of the late Bret Hansley Jr. of Hamburg who was killed in a motorcycle accident on April 16.

“He left behind five children,” said Brown.

The children are age 10 and younger. His oldest daughter is active in Berks County 4-H. His wife Cathy is a Berks County 4-H alumna.

Brown said everything was donated for the benefit, including the pig, feed and the processing of the pork.

The barrow was donated by Pfautz Show Pigs and the Kamp family. Feed was donated by Brian McAllister. Veterinary certificate donated by Dr. Jennifer Krill, VMD. Pork processing cost donated by Bur-Pak Family Foods Inc. and Cold Creek Farms. The pig was raised by Berks County 4-H Swine Club member Jacob Hartman, of Greenwich Township.

After the sale on Aug. 20 at the Kutztown Fair, the barrow will go to local butcher to be processed and then the meat along with all the proceeds from the high bidder and shares will go to the Hansely family, according to the benefit flyer.
