Champion Hogs and Lambs shown at the fair

Both Ben Williamson from State College, PA who judged the hogs and Sam Long from Airville who judged the steers and lambs agreed that the quality of animals shown at this year’s fair could compete in many fairs throughout the country and be very competitive. Even though the nights were hot, a record crowd was out each night to watch the 4-H livestock shows and view the various projects completed by our community clubs and outreach members.

The 4-H members did a great job with their animals and the buyers certainly supported their efforts. Even in this tough economy, the sale averaged well above the market prices for the day. 6 steers, 70 hogs, and 34 lambs were shown and sold at the annual event. Buyers came from all over the region to support the sale. Records were set in the hog sale with the Champion shown by David Bell of Nottingham commanding $20 per pound purchased by Lindsey Drennen of Oxford Feed and Lumber, longtime supporters of the sale located in Oxford PA.

The Reserve Champion Hog shown by Mindy Beam of Elverson commanded a record setting price of $9.50 per pound and was purchased by longtime supporters Country View Family Farms of Middletown. This was the first time any Champion shown in Chester County garnered such support breaking all previous records.

Champion Steer was also shown by Mindy Beam and was purchased by a conglomerate of buyers for $3 per pound. The Reserve Champion Steer was shown by Kaitlin Bell of Nottingham and was purchased by B&R Excavating of Nottingham, PA for $2.50 per pound.

A pair of siblings exhibited the Champion and Reserve Champion Market Lambs. Jason Mazepink and his sister Brooke from Parkesburg exhibited the grand and reserve lamb. The Grand Champion Lamb was purchased by Sentry AG Inc. Crop Insurance, Glenmoore, for $4.75 per pound and the Reserve Champion was purchased by Richard and Diane Hicks of Unionville for $4.25 per pound. The steer sale averaged $2.74 per pound, the hogs $2.52 per pound and the lambs $4.30 per pound.

Showmanship was hotly contested again which is usual for this 4-H show. Grand Champion Beef Showman was Kaitlin Bell and Reserve Grand Champion Showman was Mindy Beam. Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Sheep Showman were again the pair of siblings from Parkesburg with Champion going to Brooke and Reserve to her brother Jason Mazepink.

In the Swine Show, Champion Senior Showman was Mindy Beam and Reserve Champion Senior Showman was Rachel Stoltzfus of Coatesville. Champion Junior Showman was Zachary Johnson of Elverson and Reserve Junior Showman was David Bell. Champion First Year Showman was Zac Bare of Atglen and Reserve First Year Showman was Lauren Cairns of Parkesburg.
