More than 800 people are expected at the 8th annual Pig Roast and Car Show at Salem EC Church on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The day will spotlight cool cars and tough tractors plus home-style foods, free kids’ activities and a silent auction. The event is held, rain or shine, at the church property, 2150 Old Route 22, Lenhartsville.

Gates will open at 11 a.m. for the car show, which will run from noon to 3 p.m. This outdoor event will include classic vehicles, hot rods and motorcycles. Prizes will be awarded for best paint, best engine, the top five cars, the top three motorcycles and the top three trucks. In addition, door prizes featuring a bucket of car-pampering products will be awarded to random winners.

In conjunction with this show is the antique tractor display. This portion of the event will include classic farm vehicles from Berks County farms. Adults and children are invited to compete in a hay-bale toss in the afternoon.

Organizers plan to roast eight locally raised pigs for this year’s hot dinners, to be served from the kitchen located at the back of the property. Meals, served both in house and “to go” from noon to 6 p.m., will feature generous portions of roasted, pulled pork, plus applesauce, macaroni salad, baked beans and a roll. Drinks are also included with each meal ticket. Advance ticket purchases are suggested for the pig roast, as the meal tends to sell out each year.

Dessert is also an option. Some visitors will select from an array of homemade desserts, available for a donation, provided by church members. Also, cones of Candy’s Homemade Ice Cream, Shoemakersville, will be sold from a trailer out front near the cars and tractors.

Children are welcome at the Salem pig roast, with free activities available throughout the day. Inside the church’s gymnasium, youngsters can visit the Pig Pen activity station to complete art projects, grab a balloon and enter prize drawings. Outside, the church will host a “Touch a Truck” exhibit to allow little legs to burn off extra energy.

Representatives from Centershot, the church’s archery program for youth and adults, will host an activity station as well. Visitors can try shooting in the archery range that day. Centershot is open to the public, welcomes students from age 10 to adult and teaches competitive style archery. Classes will recommence at Salem on Sept. 20.

A Silent Auction is also planned. Items for sale will include theme baskets, gift certificates from area restaurants and stores, home decor, excursions and more. There will also be a Guess the Weight of the Hams contest featuring hams, bacon and ring bologna prizes donated by Leidy’s Meats in Souderton.

Finally, the Keystone Miller Bloodmobile will be on site. Donors may give blood from 12 to 3 p.m.

Advance tickets for the Pig Roast are available now for adults. Children under 10 can get their tickets for free.

Those interested in entering the car show should register by Monday, Sept. 5, for a reduced rate. They may also register the day of the show. All car show participants will receive a meal ticket with entry fee.
