Hamburg School District students started the 2016-17 school year on Aug. 25.

“On the first day, the principals met with each class as a group and reviewed rules,” said Hamburg teacher Teresa McCarthy, publications and student council adviser at the high school.

“Jeff Crouse, from Herff-Jones, was there to talk to seniors and measure them for caps and gowns. We hit the ground running and prepare them for June 9, 2017, which is graduation day,” she said.

Crouse will be back Sept. 8 so seniors can order announcements and other graduation supplies.

Seeing eye dog in training Wolfgang also started his first day at Hamburg High School.

“Wolfgang enjoyed his first day of school, too,” said McCarthy, who is raising the German Shepherd puppy for The Seeing Eye in Morristown, N.J.

McCarthy received the dog at 8 weeks old and began training this summer at home.

Wolfgang will be treated as a student at Hamburg High School, according to High School co-principal Chris Spohn.

“He met all his new classmates and they gave him a big, warm welcome,” said McCarthy. “He is learning to sit quietly during the pledge and National Anthem in the morning, but on the first day, he barked and howled, so we will work on that!”

McCarthy said the bells that rang between classes didn’t startle or annoy him at all.

“And he did very well walking in crowds.”
