BIRDSBORO >> Birdsboro may be a small town, but it has a big heart as evidenced by the recently launched Birdsboro Military Heroes Program. This program is a collaborative effort of the Birdsboro Rotary Club, American Legion Birdsboro Post 626, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Birdsboro Post 411. The program honors local men and women or those with a connection to Birdsboro.

Military heroes will be honored with a banner that will be displayed throughout the town. Each individual banner will be unique and honor a specific veteran including their picture, branch of service, and era of service. It is truly is a living memorial to those who have served our country.

The Military Heroes Banners are paid for by sponsors who may be friends, family or businesses. Sponsors will be named on the banners.

Bob Myers, Birdsboro Councilman, is an early supporter of this project. He states, “Those from our community who are serving, or have served our country have sacrificed a lot so that we can continue to enjoy the liberty our forefathers bestowed upon us. This is one small way in which we can express our gratitude and provide recognition for their service.”

Nancy Kauffman, former Birdsboro Council member and Secretary of the Birdsboro Rotary is spearheading the effort. She noticed other communities have banner programs and she knew it was something the community in Birdsboro would be behind.

Kauffman states, “Birdsboro is a community that respects and honors our service men and women. What is great about this project is that it is non-political and non-partisan. Everyone in the community can get behind this effort and support our military heroes.”

The initial goal of the project is to have sixteen banners up by Memorial Day, 2017.

Applications are available at Birdsboro Borough Hall, 202 E. Main St., Birdsboro. The cost of a banner is $180. For more information email BirdsboroRotary@aol.com
