POTTSTOWN >> A commotion with police in front of Barth Elementary School Wednesday afternoon was caused when a driver attempted to evade a seat-belt check and was found to have an outstanding warrant, officials said.

John Armato, the community relations director for the Pottstown School District, said the incident began as school let out and Pottstown police took the opportunity to conduct a stop and seat-belt check of cars picking up students.

“Apparently the driver of one car decided to try to avoid the check and backup, which the police obviously considered suspicious,” said Armato.

“The police apprehended the driver and it turned out he had warrants out for his arrest and in the process of searching the car found a female in the vehicle to be in possession of a suspected controlled substance,” he said.

“She was also arrested and the children in the car were taken back to the school and released to the care of relatives,” Armato said.

Parents were notified about the incident.

“No one was injured and the building principal sent out text messages to all the parents informing them of the incident,” Armato said.

Further information about the incident was unavailable from police early Wednesday evening. A phone call seeking more information was not returned before press time.
