POTTSTOWN >> One man was taken to the hospital Thursday night after police responded to a shooting in the borough.

According to police, officers responded to the area of 40 West High Street at around 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening after hearing several shots fired. When the first officer arrived, he observed one victim as well as another person running west away from the scene.

First on the scene was a Pottstown K9 officer. He left care of the victim to other officers and began tracking the suspect, who was observed running away from the scene, police said.

Police did not locate the suspect and tracking ended in the area of Manatawny Street and King Street.

The suspect is described as a black male wearing a dark top and jeans.

The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the leg that are not believed to be life-threatening. Pottstown Police Chief Richard Drumheller added Friday that if it had not been for a quick response by Sgt. Michael Ponto, the injuries may have developed into a life-threatening situation.

The victim was later transported to Reading Hospital by Goodwill Ambulance for further treatment.

Officers collected evidence outside of 40 High Street and confirmed that multiple shots had been fired from the area of the front of 40 High Street.

Police are asking that anyone with information regarding the shooting investigation contact Pottstown Detective Division at 610-970-6577.
