Second graders at Kutztown Elementary stepped back in time to experience Pioneer Day on Dec. 5.
After reading The Josefina Story Quilt and studying about the westward movement, students had a day to experience the life of a pioneer child. Students dressed as pioneers and participated in six different stations. They played yard games (Trap Ball, London Bridge and The Game of Graces), indoor games (Shut the Box, Pick Up Sticks, Bilbo, Nine Pins, Jacks and Marbles), learned how to square dance, made rag dolls, created tin punched ornaments, and experienced a Pioneer Classroom.
Students also participated in a STEM activity. They were given materials and worked in small groups to design and build their own covered wagon.
The day concluded by watching an episode of Little House on the Prairie.
