Scouts from Troop 144 Strausstown continued the tradition of retiring worn and damaged American flags during their annual flag retirement ceremony recently.

The United States Flag Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

The flags were provided for retirement from Minsi Trails Council B.S.A, V.F.W. Post 216 Hamburg, The Zion Church Cemetery and local families.

Each flag was carefully prepared by removing the stripes and stars rendering it no longer a flag then burned to ashes, and buried in a solemn ceremony as per U.S. flag code.

Each year Troop 144, who are chartered by the Strausstown Lions Club, retires hundreds of worn and damaged flags from local organizations.
