Near head-on collision on Route 61, Tilden Twp., sends 2 to hospital

A near head-on collision sent both drivers to the hospital with serious or critical injuries on Jan. 2.

Tilden Township Police report that at 6:51 p.m., Deborah Ciappa, 64, Andreas, PA, turned from Lowland Road onto State Route 61 and began traveling north in the southbound lanes of travel, reportably without headlamps activated.

Louis Damore, 55, New Ringgold was traveling south on State Route 61 in the southbound lanes of travel.

The two vehicles, a 2010 Toyota sedan and 2006 Honda sedan, collided almost head-on.

Both drivers were entrapped in their respective vehicles and freed by fire department members.

Ciappa was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Reading Hospital with critical injuries.

Damore was transported to Reading Hospital with serious injuries.

Hamburg, Shartlesville, and Shoemakersville Fire Companies assisted on scene.

An investigation is continuing.
