Hamburg Area High School students in the Wood Technology and Home Maintenance and Repair classes have been volunteering with the Habitat for Humanity Berks for the past three years.

“The students really like the experience of volunteering and helping the greater community, meeting new people (the volunteers), and learning some very useful skills they may apply on their own properties someday,” said Hamburg High School teacher Fred Yoder. “This is possible only because of the tremendous support and interest our administration has in our students and the value that these types of learning experiences provide them.”

Hamburg students will usually volunteer at least two times per year, once in the fall and again in the spring.

This past fall, nine high school students helped to hang drywall at the Habitat for Humanity house at 140 Oley St. in Reading. They were also asked by Habitat for Humanity to volunteer again Jan. 12 to help remove vanities, bathtub and shower units and also spa tubs from the former Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Reading.

“Habitat for Humanity will sell these items at their restore locations around the county to raise funds to support their cause,” said Yoder.
