During the Jan. 24 meeting of the Boyertown school directors, the board was asked to nominate and appoint a representative for the Berks County Intermediate Unit Joint Operating Committee.
The appointee would serve for a three year term from July 1, 2017 ending June 30, 2020.
During the call for nominations, board vice president Clay Breece nominated Christine Neiman; Stephen Elsier nominated Jill Dennin. A vote on the nominations resulted in a 4-4 tie; Paul Stengle was absent from the meeting.
Solicitor Jeffrey Sultanik said one of the members would have to change their vote in order to get the 5 votes for the appointment to move forward.
“I will say the appointment to the Intermediate Unit is an important appointment because we share not only a seat and communicate with other districts in Berks County, but also their legislative and curricular budgets are what we vote on,” said Sultanik. He added that there’s no limit under the code for when the board would need to fill that appointment.
Dennin is currently serving on the BCIU board; her term is up at the end of June.
“We would likely have time to fill this at a future meeting,” Sultanik.
Discussion of the appointment will be continued at the next school board voting meeting on Feb. 14.
