Kutztown residents Derek and Karise Mace are hosting a Gala fundraiser for Emerge Pennsylvania on Feb. 11 from 7 to 10 p.m.
“This group helps prepare women to enter politics,” said Mace. “My three daughters wanted to do something to help more women get into politics. They’ve been watching the news and felt there aren’t enough women in decision-making positions.”
The Gala is at the Kutztown Fire Company Banquet Hall and attendance is by donation. There will be a cash bar and some light refreshments.
“We intend it as a family dance party. And everyone interested in getting more women into politics is very welcome,” said Mace. “It’s open to everyone. But we’re relying on word of mouth. We don’t have a budget, just connections with family and friends and friends and their friends. The invitation has gone beyond us. It’s in the ether now. About 100 people have said they’ll attend.”
Mace’s colleague, Kutztown University professor Dr. Erin Kraal, told them about Emerge Pennsylvania. Mace said that Mary Joe Daley, State Rep. and co-founder of the group will be attending to discuss their efforts.
Highlights of the event include dancing, laughing and meeting other folks, said Mace.
“To have fun. We want to celebrate with other people who are interested in seeing women get into politics. And we want to raise money to aid that goal,” said Mace.
They hope to help women in politics by funding a group that offers to train them and prepare them for political office, said Mace. Funds raised at the Gala go toward Emerge Pennsylvania.
“Our daughters know that action leads to more action. They’ve decided to lead us into taking action on this issue,” said Mace. “Besides, dancing, snacks and party clothes? What’s not to like?”
The Gala is open to the public. Attendance is by donation.
