Michele Albert, director of university events, was presented the 2017 Staff Award of Merit at University of the Sciences’ 196th Founders’ Day Ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Albert has been employed at USciences for more than 10 years, rising in the ranks from catering manager to meeting and events coordinator and eventually becoming director.

“As the director of university events she is responsible for providing leadership and professional expertise in the planning and implementation of the University’s many, many events,” said USciences President Dr. Paul Katz. “In this highly visible position, she interacts not only with faculty and staff, but also with students, parents, trustees, donors, distinguished guests, visiting dignitaries and community members.”

In addition to planning the University’s events and those organized by outside groups hosted by the University, Albert has played a role in several high profile visits, including the Obama re-election campaign stop by then first lady Michelle Obama, and a Healthcare Fraud Summit featuring the former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.

Albert, of Gilbertsville, received an AS in culinary arts from The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, as well as a certification in meeting planning from Temple University. She is a Certified Meeting Professional as recognized by the Convention Industry Council. Beyond her career at USciences, Albert also boasts years of professional event planning experience in the food and corporate industries.

Each year, Founders’ Day at USciences recognizes its establishment on Feb. 23, 1821, as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy-the first college of pharmacy in North America, which is now a part of USciences. As part of the ceremony, an honorary doctor of science degree was presented to alumnus Edgardo A. Mercandante P’79, the Chief Executive Officer of MedOptions.
